I turned 40 about 3 weeks ago, even before that i have always wondered for the last 5 years, if people are thinking "look at that old lady trying to look young". I have had the same hair syle for 20+ years, scared to change it, and have a hard time finding clothes that isn't for a teen or a grandmother type. what have you all done, to not feel this way, or am i the only one? and by the way as far as the hair, i have very thick natural curley and red (with gray) i want to look natural. (but not that natural).

I can identify big time with your question! I KNOW people are saying "look at that old lady.....") but when I think that I also think "and I'm doing a dam fine job at it too!!" I completely refuse to alter my style to be "age appropriate", I cant even think of the day I would cut my hair short to fit into any ones idea of what I should look like for my age! The way I "handle" this is by keeping myself healthy and fit and not accepting lesser standards for myself just because I'm older. I personally Think gray hair can be beautiful but not on me and not yet so I dye my hair its natural color, sometimes I use henna. As far as clothing goes, i have toned it down a bit but would not consider anything frumpy.! Happy 40th, and may you have many more!

Stop worrying what other people think about you.
Stop worrying about what others might think about your appearance.
Begin to focus on other things of greater importance, i.e. intangibles that aren't important with regards to your impression on others.
Dye your hair if you want.
Wear younger clothes if you want.
Do whatever you want.
It's your life.
Be yourself.

first, don't panic. second get a new haircut. something easy to care for but not too poofy or too much maintenance, as long as you are not trying to dress like paris hilton or some other youngster u r ok. take some style hints from the cast of "desperate Housewives" Teri Hatcher always look great and she dresses stylichly and age appropriate!

Don't change anything about you, that you don't want changed. Just because we turn a year older on our birthday it doesn't make us any different the we were the day before.
When I turned 40 a well meaning friend told me I needed to cut my hair, as older women don't wear their hair long. My response was "I didn't go along with what was 'in' when I was young, why am I going to do it now."

I AGREE WITH IVY. DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK ABOUT YOU. DRESS THE WAY YOU WANT. PLEASE ONLY YOURSELF. I AM 47 AND NOBODY TELLS ME HOW TO DRESS INCLUDING HUBBY, MOM AND KIDS. BE YOURSELF AND ENJOY LIFE.

Look at what is in style for ladies your age. Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Susan Sarandon,Oprah, or whoever and find a general look. I am not saying copy Hollywood. Depending where you live and your income, it may not be possible to spend that kind of money. I suggest looking at magazine as well for a hair style. Rule of thumb: If you think it's too young, it probably is.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I'm 47 and started coloring my hair years ago. I just use a color that most closely matches my own to cover the gray. I am only 5'2, so I can shop in the Junior's section of Kohl's for blouses, that are youthful, but still conservative with no belly showing. Go ahead and find yourself some midrise jeans with a nice long loose top. Try on new styles until you find something you feel good and confident in.
As to your hair , find a salon that can show you virtual computer images of yourself with different styles. Be Bold, 40 is a power age !!

As far as your age, that can be a little hard to answer because you have 60 year olds that look like Tina Turner or Patty LaBelle who neither look a day over 50 I'm thinking. Then you have 40 year olds that look like they must have had a hard life because they look 60.
As far as your dress. Look at people your age that you admire at work, church etc. Mimick them and add your own flair to that. Also think about what your assets are. If you have pretty legs, you could probably get away with a shorter skirt than most and so on. In hi-end stores, you can get someone to help you put together outfits.
As far as your hair. Don't just look for a hair stylest, look for a colorest. They are certified and experienced enough to fit a color to your complexion, face shape etc. They can also tell you how to take care of colored hair.
Most importantly, be who and what makes you comfortable and don't worry what other people think!

You sound just like my own mother. She's 42 and worries that she either dresses too young or too old. The thing about it is that she doesn't look a day over 35 and I think she can dress young and still look fabulous.
I personally think that people should just wear whatever they want to wear, whether or not it seems too old or young. I do understand the need to feel as if you look age appropriate though.
The ones above me give you great advice, like jr90292. I do think that having a role model to kind of emulate is good. You can always wear clothing that works for anyone, like trouser jeans, cute flats, button down shirts (like 3/4 sleeves) and things like that. You'd be classic and tailored. As for hair and makeup, I don't know, but I say do whatever you want and make it something you can work with easily.

Hi Tina...... Happy 40th! Never be afraid to experiment and have fun with your hair and clothes. Change is good, it can make you feel wonderful! Like rearranging the living room furniture. It is just a necessary thing for us woman over 40, and any age. Your hair sounds wonderful and with the natural curls there are so many styles and cuts you could do, and highlights. Salons have some of the best hair style books out, just sit and go through them finding the styles you like. Same with grocery stores in their magazine section, you should be able to find several with styles. Something should grab you.
I grow my hair out, and I cut it of short. Even though sometimes I think "why did I cut my hair off?" I love the change. It always grows back. I color mine as well, being naturally blond I sometimes just highlight it, sometimes I darken it, and sometimes I darken it and then highlight it.
Don't be afraid to try new things, whether is a hair style, your make-up, or your clothes style. It's loads of fun, and refreshing. As far as dress goes, I wear what I am comfortable in, and sometimes it is hard to find clothes I like, since styles change. I notice though that some new styles have grown on me, and again trying new things can be very refreshing.
I think you are ready for the change, and why you ask. I support you, now go do it! Have fun!!!

you should not be so concerned about this.. find people who love you the way you are.. you don't need to look 16 forever..personally..not only do I prefer the goddess physique? (slightly plump) but I like'em plain and normal looking..allot of guys do..they are just too weak to admit it
