I got a lovely, sweet, adorable peruvian guinea pig for Christmas. I would like to know the official name for his coloring. He has cream/white hair on his face, a row of dark gray almost black behind that on his neck, followed by another row of creamy white around his midsection, and a dark gray almost black rear. He has a small spot of red/tan on his head above his left eye; just a little tuft.
Guinea pig variety?
Usually piggie people just call that "tri-color," but technically, I think he's probably a mix of a Dutch and Tortoiseshell. Dutch guinea pigs have a white "blaze" down their otherwise colored face, the middle of their body is white, and the back end is the same color as their head. That's probably MOSTLY what he is. Tortoiseshell piggies have all three colors, but they're in big patches on them and there's kind of a dividing line down the middle of their back where they colors differ. He may have some agouti in him too - check and see if in any of his colored sections the hairs themselves are two different colors - like blending from black to brown, for example. Anyway, like I said, "tri-color" is really the most accurate way to describe him, he sounds like quite a cool mix =) My piggies have their own website if you want some picture references of colors - Chuck is an Agouti, Norris is - who knows what..I don't even know what breed he is, his back hair is long like a Peruvian but the front half of him is short hair, except a little mohawk thing he has going =) and Walker is Dutch/Tortoiseshell. On the gallery page you should find some shots that show the sort-of dilineation down his back. This is the address:

Unless you find a certified breeder to tell you otherwise, I'd just stick to calling your little guy a Tricolor Peruvian. =)

hes most likely a calico like the cat or a broken tort. I had one just like it but the kids in my science class broke his jaw and he died... last time i bring a pet into school! LOL

Based on the description you gave, it is most likely a mix. However, if you want a definitive answer, you may want to contact a guinea pig breeder - I found one of the best breeders and got their e-mail address - I am sure you could send a picture asking for some help.
