My cat is about 11 months old now ( we found her about 3 or 4 months ago). She is gray/silver in color with pronounced spots not only on her hair but her skin as well. She has greenish eyes with an amber cast to them. She also has the "m" marking on her forehead, 2 mascara lines on her cheeks coming off the corners of her eyes, and a long striped tail. She also displays a lot of the characteristics behaviorally to what I've read about Egyptian Maus (e.i. loves to hunt, loves her food, very quick).
I adopted a cat that I think is an Egyptian Mau, but how can I know for sure?
It could be a Mau but I doubt it. Maus are very rare and hard to find. It is most likely a Silver Bengal or a Silver Mau mix. There's really no way to know for sure. I will tell you, Bengals like water and like to lay in high places. Bengals also have spots on their bellies. Not sure if Maus do. Bengals can have green or amber eyes, either are acceptable and they have the dark under their eyes as well. Are the spots kinda fuzzy? Is the fur a cat fur or is it more a slick pelt? If the spots are fuzzy and it has fur, chances are good you may have a Mau. If the spots are clear and the coat is a pelt, then you most likely have a Bengal. Also, if you see golden colored fur on the face belly tail or paws, then that is called glitter and it is a Bengal. Bengals are now very common cats and are TICA's # 1 regestered cat. They also have a deep meow while Maus are decribed as sounding like they sing instead of meow. Either way, both cats are beautiful and wonderful creatures. You are luckyto have found this cat and I know she loves you as much as you love her.
If you send me a picture, I might have a bettter chance of telling you if it is Mau or Bengal, but without paperwork, it's hard to promise anything. Maus were used as foundation cats in Bengal developmet.

Hello, do you have any local cat society there? You may try and consult them with this matter. They can usually tell if the cat has breeding or not.

Go to this site. There lots of pictures and descriptions on line.
I am allergic to cats, I love them. This is a beautiful elegant beast! The photos should identify your pet immediately. The second site gives measurements and specific details about these kitties.

It could be a Mau. It also sounds like maybe a Bengal cat.

The Wikipedia article says that Maus have spotted skin. That would be the clincher.

Man, if she looks like this, that's one beautiful cat.
Since this is the Egyptian Mau Club, you probably can get some answers from them. If you have a digital cam, maybe you can send them a pic of your cat.
