We recently moved where there are other dogs. My dogs have always been very healthy, until we were in Oklahoma for about 3 weeks---they got terrible fly bites on there ears......we got that taken care of and they were as good as new till we moved to another state....there is a dog that lives where we do and I think it has mange ( I have looked it up and I believe thats what she has her owners say its a skin disease but she is constatly itching, has a few scabbed areas and alot of her hair has fallen out she is 13 years). Since we have been here my male rott has gotten a couple of areas on his muzzle that are a dirty gray in color and looks like the hair is falling out, he doesn't seem to be itching it. Any suggestons would be helpful?

Skin conditions can be caused by many many things. Most commonly are allergies, mange (specifically demodex, which is caused by a compromised immune system and stress - not contagious to you), ringworm (a fungus that is contagious to you), and sometimes even flea allergy dermatitis. The best option for you is to take him to your vet for an exam. Most likely, a skin scrape will be performed, which allows the vet to see if there are any mites involved. A culture of the hairs and follicles can also be performed to check for fungus growth. In any case, a pair of trained eyes and some diagnostics are your best bet. I would take care of this problem now before it a) gets worse or b) spreads to you or your other animals.
Good luck!

Take him to the vet. They are the only ones that can diagnose and treat what may be going on. Good luck

It is best to take it to the vet for diagnosis. However, if it was in the advanced stage, you really don't need a vet because you could pretty much tell on your own. If you don't have the money for a vet, just get some kind of mange cream to put on the dog. It's pretty much easy to treat. Plus you will save money. Some vets just charge waay too much for simple treatments that you could actually do yourself.

I am a veterinarian and your dog should be taken to see your vet. As said by other people above, an examination of the skin and a skin scraping and/or fungus culture will help a lot - there could be so many things like mites (mange), fleas, allergies, bacterial or fungal infection, immune system diseases, endocrine system diseases... Skin problems are some of the most common, but can also be the most difficult cases that we treat on a day to day basis. The starting point is an exam and then your vet can recommend additional tests to help you find the answer. Good luck.

Please take him to a vet "DON'T", mess around with it !
Mange is not fun for the dog or you. You need to see a vet only he can give you the right med that you will need. If it is Mange you will have to keep other dogs or cats away from your dog. The vet will take a scraping of the skin where the hair loss is and put it under a Microscope then he will know what it is %26amp; what med to give you.. Don't worry it don't hurt your baby :)
