Someone recently told me that truly black cats are actually rare. Is this true?

(I have a cat who is entirely black, although her skin is white, and where her hair parts on her belly, you can see it. The insides of her ears are pale pink and gray and black, mottled. Her tongue is pink, but with a black spot. Now that she's getting older, she has the random silver hair every now %26amp; then, but otherwise, there's no other color. I never thought this was rare, but is it?)

Who ever told you that is pulling your leg, or heard that from some yahoo at the local bar. Solid black cats are not rare. They are quite common. I think what they meant is its hard to find a solid black cat with out some sort of little white patch. Also Dark Chocolates are often mistake for pure blacks. Also black cats when in the sun can have a reddish tinge to them and sometimes you can see a pattern of swirls in the coat that are lighter. Just like human peoples hair can bleach in the sun, so can cat and animal fur. They don't always tend to be one solid color through, so if your friend wants to say.... truly black cats are rare, then he can say truly white cats, truly gray cats, truly brown cats, are rare too. Any dark colored animal will get shot with gray as they get older, its part of the aging process and the amount of Melanin production that causes the hair color.

ADDTIONAL INFORMATION: Well then I guess i am totally wrong since 2 people think that pure black cats are rare, and disagreed with me, maybe in my neck of the woods I have some really really totally cool ALLLLLL black cats, not to mention the colony outside the local restarant that is complete made up of solid black cats. Not a lick of any other colors mixed in. Also the fact that our shelter has on avery 4 to 10 SOLID BLACK green eyed or golden eyed(dark skin, black pads of paws, nose, not a single white hair or chocolatey hair available) and even dark gummed cats up for adoption at all times. We have to sometimes band these cats when they are on the play floor cause we cant tell them apart. Also that my friends barn solid black barn cat has consecutively produced solid black kittens in her last 3 litters (despite my begging her to spay the poor cat) Only one kitten out of the 3 litters was a grey tabby. I guess then i cant base my answer on this information and as all of you who have thumbed me down can just keep saying how rare black cats are. I am surrounded by solid black cats. I must be one lucky person considering I cant even GIVE them away there are too many.

now that i think of it, it may be somewhat true.

think about it.

how often do you see an all black cat in real life?

Someone recently told me that truly black cats are actually rare. Is this true?

No, black cats are extremely common. If the cat's nose is black and its paw pads are nearly black, then it's a black cat. Black is a dominant gene for coat color so it's likely to pass on at least some black to any kittens. Quite often an entire litter born from a black mother are all black.

No. That's funny. Black is one of the most common colors and they are anything but rare. I've had 4 solid black cats in my life.

I think that what they mean is that most black cats actually have very dark brown hair. I have heard this before and finally saw it on my black cat yesterday. He was laying on my lap in the sunshine and when I parted some of his hair you could actually see in the sunlight that it is brown and not solid black. You might try looking at the hair in direct sunlight. My cats hair looks black in the normal lights of our house but is hair at the roots and when parted in the sunlight is actually brown. He still looks black in the sunlight over all but if you really look closely mine is actually a brunette. lol. Hope this might answer your question. Good luck and myabe your cat is one of the rare BLACK cats. Oh and by the way the saying that black cats are bad luck is actually not true. Supposedly true black cats are very good luck. just thought you might want to know.

Someone recently told me that truly black cats are actually rare. Is this true?

yes!!! think about it... how often do you actually see a PURE BLACK cat? If I were you, I would breed them. :-)

Someone recently told me that truly black cats are actually rare. Is this true?

True black cats are rare, yes.

Your cat is not completely black - it is the common type with white hairs and mottled skin. We had about 10 nonrelated barn cats with the same coloration.

A true black cat has no pink skin at all and no white hairs on it's body, unless it is old, then they may have some grey coloration near the face. If there is any pink skin or white hairs- it is not a true black. With genetics, a true black can only throw true blacks. If there is some mixing of colors, I am betting if your cat had kittens, they would be a mix of colors.

Someone recently told me that truly black cats are actually rare. Is this true?

Ignore everyones ignorance. The truth is there is absolutely no such thing as a true black cat (just the same as humans having black hair). Our bodies and their are not capable of producing such a color.

Most people mistake the jet black for something else. Hold your "black" cat to the sun light and look at what color she really is. It will be the deepest, most beautiful, brown you have ever seen. Just ask my tuxedo cat, she'll tell you.

all i know is that we have four black cats here at work and three at home! lol

In my neighborhood, there are a lot of black cats. The ones I have looked at have black noses and dark skin .Their fur shines blue-gray in the sun, and they all have green eyes .These are the ones I have seen. It's not rare where I live.
